Mixtura ‘Green’ Blanco 2020
Mixtura ‘Green’ Blanco 2020
Mixtura is a small craftsman winery in northwestern Spain helmed by Gutier Seijo Otero, a Galicia native who has gained extensive experience working in some of the most prestigious cellars of Galicia and throughout the world in his work with other top wineries. Created in 2019, Mixtura – Independent Wines is the natural evolution of his ideals, vision, and all that he has learned along the way.
Mixtura was born of an ideology built on the search and recovery of historical vineyards and their native varieties along the course of the ancient river valleys of northwestern Spain’s border with Portugal. Working with grape varieties that straddled the Miño river centuries before a border even existed, Guti has left the geographical and political restrictions of appellations behind him in order to focus on discovering the purest expressions of terroir.
After extensive work in the region, Mixtura ‘Green’ is a white wine Gutier has identified as his ideal expression of albariño (or alvarinho in Portugal). ‘Green’ is produced from a single, north-facing parcel of old, pergola-trained albariño near the village of Penso in the Melgaço subzone of the Portuguese Vinho Verde D.O. The Melgaço subzone consists of vineyards planted on the hillsides of the Miño river valley’s southern bank in sábrego–sandy decomposed granite, across from the Condado do Tea subzone. Gutier’s vines flourish in an amphitheater facing the river. The albariño from this vineyard is aromatically expressive, with great elegance and intensity on the palate, and a very long finish. ‘Green’ is the first Paraje, or parcel, selection from Mixtura. Gutier works the vineyard by hand with regenerative and certified organic agricultural methods, including his utilization of cover grasses.
“The goal of Mixtura is to find great parcels along the Miño river. This wine is the beginning of my faith in a certified “Grand Cru” parcel of the Miño river.” – Gutier Seijo
As with all of Mixtura’s cuvées, once vinified, the wine rests undisturbed until Gutier decides the wine has entered the ideal window of expression. Gutier utilizes his extensive experience tasting the wines of Galicia throughout his career to make this decision. ‘Green’ is absolutely exploding with energy and displays incredible structure, intensity, and character. Undoubtedly, one of the region’s most profound expressions.
Vinification – Albariño bunches are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard. After crushing, the must begins alcoholic fermentation spontaneously with native yeasts in large format Austrian Stockinger foudres without temperature control. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is racked into Italian Nico Velo ceramic eggs, where it develops for a further 12 months. No malolactic fermentation. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulfur at bottling.
