Luberri Seis 2019

Luberri Seis is one of the most charming, iconic wines of Rioja, a triumph of making the difficult task of making consistently delicious wines look easy. Florentino Monje’s goal with Seis is to create a wine from tempranillo that expresses the truth and gastronomy of his native Basque region, a wine that makes people happy. Seis is a simple wine that is not simple at all. Florentino became famous for resurrecting and perfecting the traditional style of semi-carbonic, whole-cluster maceration of tempranillo that is historic to Rioja Alavesa and utilized in Seis. This style of fermentation dates back more than two hundred years in the region before the changes that came with the arrival of phylloxera and the importation of French winemaking techniques.

Vintage – 2019 is an excellent vintage in Rioja Alavesa, which yielded well-balanced, fully ripe grapes with good acidity and lower alcohol. The climate was far more Mediterranean in style over the growing period in contrast to the much cooler, wetter conditions of 2018. Yields were around 20% lower than average but great for quality thanks to smaller berries offering intense flavors with depth and complexity.

Vinification – For this “semi-crianza” wine, the grape clusters are put into stainless steel tanks whole, without crushing or destemming, with the beginning of fermentation being intracellular. The grapes are then pressed, and the skins are macerated while alcoholic fermentation finishes. The wine is then racked in American oak barrels, where it ages for six months before bottling.
