La Comarcal Grillat Valencia 2023

La Comarcal Grillat Valencia 2023

La Comarcal is a small project by two good friends who just happen to be two of eastern Spain’s most talented viticultores: Javi Revert and Victor Marqués. La Comarcal (“The District”) was founded in 2017, with vineyards located in the mountainous villages of Venta del Moro and La Font de la Figuera in the Valencia D.O. The inspiration for Javi and Victor was the concept of making delicious, expressive, youthful wines from the old vineyards of native Valencian grape varieties. They maintain a regenerative focus in every aspect of their work, farming with organic viticulture and fermenting with native yeasts.

The pair’s philosophy is rooted in a deep love for their native region and making great wines by working with the natural landscape of the Valencian countryside, an area that has incredible untapped potential for winemaking. From researching the best locations to replace the once-dominant international varieties with native grapes, to working with traditional mixed-agriculture farming and planting trees, Javi and Victor are lifelong students of their natural environment, with the winemaking experience to make a significant impact there. It’s reflected in the energy and transparency of the project, making this winemaking duo among the most exciting to watch in Spain.

La Comarcal’s flagship red wine, Grillat, comes from two plots at 700m in the foot of the Penya Foradà mountains, near the village of La Font de la Figuera, about an hour southwest of the city of Valencia, near the border with Castilla-La Mancha. Grillat, which translates into something like “a little bit crazy, in a fun way” in the local Valencian language, is made from 85% Monastrell and 15% Garnacha. Grillat is a vibrant, energetic red wine featuring a fragrant explosion of flowers, wild strawberry, blueberry, and herbs, with a bright palate bursting with acidity and lots of lift and red berry notes. Grillat clocks in at just over 12.5% ABV, and is a party to drink, especially lightly chilled.
