Viña Sastre

Ribera del Duero | Castilla y León

Viña Sastre is an iconic, family-run winery in the heart of Ribera del Duero, near Burgos in the town of La Horra, known for producing powerful, structured reds from old-vine tempranillo.

A Family Legacy in Ribera del Duero

Viña Sastre is an iconic, family-run winery located in La Horra, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Jesús Sastre has been the driving force behind the winery since 2002, following the passing of his brother Pedro. The Sastre family have been grape growers in the region since at least their great-grandfather’s time, giving Jesús unparalleled knowledge of the local vineyards. His grandfather, Severiano, was a founding member of the local Asunción cooperative, and his father, Rafael, established the Sastre winery in 1992 at the urging of his sons, producing the first vintage that same year. Today, Jesús’ two children, Sara and Raúl, are increasingly involved in the day-to-day operations, eager to carry on the family legacy and keep its traditions alive.

From Vineyards to Vision

The Sastre family’s vineyards are primarily located in La Horra, with an average vine age exceeding 60 years. Only plots planted before 1960 are considered “old” and reserved for the winery’s single-vineyard selections. Perched at high altitudes around 800 meters, these vineyards benefit from significant day-to-night temperature swings, creating ideal conditions for naturally balanced, expressive grapes that form the foundation of Viña Sastre’s distinctive style.

Natural Precision in the Vineyard

Jesús Sastre, while not adhering to any strict dogma, has spent over 30 years committed to organic and biodynamic principles, never using chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Pruning follows traditional moon cycles, and copper is used sparingly to protect the vineyard ecosystem and earthworms. Harvest here is early, usually at least ten days before his neighbors.

Ancestral Craft from Grape to Bottle

Grapes are hand-harvested into boxes with careful selection in the field, followed by meticulous sorting at the winery to ensure only the finest fruit is used in Viña Sastre wines. Fermentation is spontaneous, using native vineyard yeasts, and wines are never fined or filtered. Cold stabilization occurs naturally as wines are moved from the barrel room to tanks in areas where winter temperatures regulate themselves. From vineyard to bottle, Jesús’ approach embodies ancestral, natural winemaking at its highest level, producing wines that are precise, expressive, and deeply reflective of Ribera del Duero’s terroir.

Signature Vineyards of Viña Sastre

Viña Sastre’s crowning achievements are their premium parcel wines, crafted from selected plots for which they are renowned throughout Spain. Pago de Santa Cruz Gran Reserva blends five plots surrounding a tree-topped hill at 840 m, bordering Condado de Haza, and is the traditional family wine to be shared with friends. It follows the classic Ribera del Duero style, aging at least 30 months in French and American oak and released with at least six years of age—one year beyond the five required—with around 500 cases produced only in the best vintages. This dedication to quality and instinctive style is another hallmark of Jesús Sastre’s exceptional vision. Pesus is Sastre’s prestige wine, the name being a combination of Jesus and Pedro, after his late brother and winery co-founder. The grapes for Pesus are individually picked and selected by the family, produced in small quantities in only the best vintages. Less than 2,000 highly sought after bottles are produced in a good vintage. Sastre’s wines combine power and fruit with elevated freshness, long textured palates, and remarkable complexity, reflecting his mastery of balancing tradition, technique, and expressive, site-driven character.
