Julie et Patrick Noël
Sancerre | Loire Valley
In the heart of the Loire, Julie Noël makes structured, soulful wines from prime estate vineyards in Chavignol and Sancerre, tended by her family over the course of three centuries.
Introducing the Estate
From Chavignol, Through Generations
The Noël family has farmed vineyards around the villages of Saint-Satur, Sancerre, and Chavignol for over three hundred years. Today, Julie Noël leads the estate founded by her father, Patrick, in 1988. From 18 hectares of estate vines, she crafts expressive Sancerre, old-vine Pouilly-Fumé, and fresh, mineral Menetou-Salon shaped by the great limestone and silex terroirs of the Loire Valley.
History & Origins
A Matriarchal Legacy
The Noël family’s vineyards have traditionally been passed from mother to daughter—the opposite of the patriarchal system of inheritance common in France. Patrick Noël, an exception to this tradition, left a decade-long career as a research engineer and returned to his ancestral home in Saint-Satur after inheriting the estate’s current holdings. He founded Domaine Patrick Noël in 1988 at the foot of the Sancerre hill. The winery is built on the historic site of vines first cultivated by monks of the Saint-Satur Abbey in the 14th century, with its cellars buried into the hillside overlooking the Loire Valley.
The Next Noël
A Return to Roots

Today, the domaine is led by Julie Noël, whose name has been added to the domaine to reflect her leading role in all aspects of viticulture and winemaking. Julie honed her skills at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune and the Faculty of Oenology in Bordeaux, and worked at wineries in Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, and New Zealand.

Process & Philosophy
Terroir Crafted
Julie farms 18 hectares across Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and Menetou-Salon, with 80 percent of the holdings in Chavignol. In Sancerre, their parcels are on three terroirs: Les Bouffants, la Côte Des Monts Damnés, and l’Orme au Loup. In Pouilly-Fumé, their vines are planted on silex soil in the village of Tracy-sur-Loire.
On average, the vines for the estate Sancerre are between 25 and 40 years old, with some plots of 65-year-old vines. Their Sancerre is a blend of vineyards from Chavignol, Sancerre, and Saint-Satur, which includes all 3 soil types of the region. Silex (flinty clay) plots are located in Sancerre, with Kimmeridgian clay-limestone plots called terres blanches located in Chavignol and Saint-Satur, and finally, caillottes (stony calcareous limestone) plots in Chavignol.
In total, the estate is composed of over 50 fragmented plots, with some as small as 250 square meters, reflecting centuries of family inheritance and intimate knowledge of the land. Guided by a respect for the land and its ecosystems, Julie emphasizes ecological balance in the vineyards and has obtained Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certification, a French certification awarded to farmers who demonstrate the highest environmental standards in biodiversity, pesticide use, fertilization, and water management.
All the wines are made with estate grapes that ferment with native yeasts and undergo minimal intervention, allowing the structure, minerality, and soul of the Loire Valley to shine. From their flagship Sancerre to Menetou-Salon and small single-terroir selections like Cuvée Excellence and l’Étincelle du Loup, the domaine marries centuries of heritage with precision, intensity, and elegance.
