The fruit-driven, juicy and expressive red 2017 Unculín is pure Mencía from very old vines produced in a light and refreshing style to make it easy to drink. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and had a total maceration time of some 30 days. It matured in a combination of stainless steel tanks and oak foudres for six months. It's clean and reminiscent of a northern Rhône Syrah, with floral, earthy and smoked meat aromas. The palate is round and lush, with fine tannins, very tasty flavors and good balance and freshness. Delicious! 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2018.

There is now a white 2017 Unculín Blanco, a blend of Doña Blanca with 30% Godello, which is more or less what you find in the old vineyards in Bierzo. 2017 was marked by frost and later there was warm and dry weather, so yields were low. Both varieties fermented separately, pressed after 24 hour of maceration and only half of the must was let to settle. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and was kept with lees for four months. It didn't go through malolactic. It's clean, floral and fruit-driven, faintly balsamic, with a very agreeable nose and a succulent, tasty palate with pungent, clean flavors and very good persistence and length. It has a very tasty, mineral finish. Super tasty. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.

There is also a white 2017 Aires de Vendimia Godello from old vines in the village of Valtuille on sandy soils. The must with all the lees was put in barrel to ferment with indigenous yeasts, then the wine was put in 500-liter oak barrels to mature for one year. There is just a creamy touch, but the wine is not oaky; it's varietal with a spicy and balsamic twist. The palate is clean, focused and intense, with delineated flavors, very good freshness and a very tasty finish, almost salty. Impressive. 4,600 bottles were filled in August 2018.

2016 José Antonio García Aires de Vendimia Mencía de Valtuille

The red 2016 Aires de Vendimia Mencía de Valtuille is nothing like the previous vintages I have tasted. The wine has seen a great improvement and has a clean and floral nose, with contained ripeness and integrated oak. The palate is juicy, with round tannins, a soft texture and clean, persistent flavors. Very tasty. It reflects a general change I've noticed in the winery, where all wines have gained in elegance and precision—the fruit is more focused; ripeness is perfect; and the élevage respects the wines and helps them express the variety, place and vintage. 2016 was not an easy year, but the result is phenomenal. The fine fermented in foudre with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels of different sizes for 15 months. 4,700 bottles were filled in October 2017.
